Leicestershire County Council released a cabinet report recommending that Council run Care Homes be transferred to other service providers. The report stated that the majority of respondents were against the transfer of the nine Care Homes and the majority were against the closure of both the nine Care Homes and Catherine Dalley House.
Speaking at the Leicestershire County Council Cabinet meeting on 15th June, Cllr David Sprason said, "The only option we have is to transfer the Care Homes, as they have no future under the County Council". He went on to say savings will need to be made and that the homes would be transferred to quality providers. However a degree of flexibility is required to ensure they are successfully transferred.
As part of the consultation, Leicestershire LINk recommended that all care homes should stay open. If they are transferred then their high standards should be maintained and if they were not transferred then Leicestershire County Council should continue to run them. The same conclusion was reached about the Day Centres. However Leicestershire LINk members have now raised the question; "What is Leicestershire County Council going to do to ensure respite care is available in the county?"
John Baker, Chair of Leicestershire LINk, said, "Whilst the LINk does have some sympathy with Local Authorities in the current economic climate, they must always remember that the patients and public come first."
Pauline Cutress, Leicestershire LINk member, said, "Leicestershire County Council have a duty to ensure residents of Leicestershire have access to the care services they need, but if they are not providing them then how are they going to ensure that this is the case?"
Janet Rowe, Leicestershire LINk member, said, "The one thing that we need to be concerned about is what is going to happen to the dementia day centres. We care about the people, but we need to make sure that there are services available and where people will go if the Care Homes close?"
